Abstract
The study explores the social networks of elderly who live alone in city. It also examines associations between network types and mental health indicators: depression and self-neglect. The data were drawn from a regional survey of ¡°the living conditions of elderly(65+) living alone¡± (N=1,024). Cluster analysis was applied to derive social network types using 5 criterion variables. In the multiple regression, the mental health outcomes were regressed on the network type construct and on demographic characteristics. Results are as belows. First, four social network types were derived: ¡°family-focused¡±(20.6%), ¡°social participation-focused¡±(21.5%), ¡°disengaged¡± (33.6%), ¡°diverse¡±(24.1%). Second, older adults with disengaged social network tend to be of male, low socioeconomic status, low health condition. On the other hands, older persons who have diverse networks tend to be female, relatively middle socioeconomic status and high health condition. Third, social network type was found to be associated with each of the mental health indicators. Respondents embedded in network types characterized by greater and diverse social support network tend to exhibit better mental health in terms of less depression, less self-neglect. This study discusses the implications of these results.
